Event Description

Go Beyond Wikipedia

Synopsis:

Most people already use and love Wikipedia. But there are a great number of other public wikis out there deserved to be known, used, and loved. In this month's session, we go beyond Wikipedia and survey some of the most useful and creative public wikis today.

Several excellent wiki travel guides are available. They are free and are updated by locals continuously. Californians are developing free textbooks for public schools using wikis. Motorists are tracking gas prices at local gas stations similarly (wiki database). Al Gore's TV network uses viewer-created content extensively (wiki TV). Even feature films are being made collaboratively (and you don't have to be a film director, you could write a foreign language subtitle).

You will hear these and other examples on how people around the world are using wikis in different creative ways.

Who should come and why:

This month's session is for both the general public and wiki enthusiasts. If you have used Wikipedia, then you have already sampled what collective wisdom of crowds can achieve. This session will go beyond Wikipedia and show you how people around the world today are using wikis to collaborate in many creative ways.

Speaker: Derek Wong

Derek Wong is the founder of Wiki1001.com, a directory of wikis around the world. Wiki enthusiasts can discover wikis of their interests while wiki organizers can list their wikis to attract new contributors. And true to the wiki spirit, Wiki1001 is also a wiki ... anyone can edit the wiki directory list. This makes Wiki1001 a wiki of wikis.
